Windows Vista: BAN or ALLOW?

vista_ban I have heard so much about Vista's quirks lately, especially from disgruntled co-workers and friends who had decided to take the early plunge!

Their daily comments on Vista range from "G" all the way up to "R" rating, as allegedly the productivity has, since their upgrade, fallen to an all time low.

Then, yesterday, I hear this bit of news! The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) bans Windows Vista. NIST is now considering a Linux + Google Apps alternative. This is a bold move, and one that I do not particularly agree with; Perharps topic for another blog post though.

The FAA and the US Department of Transportation have also imposed a similar embargo on Internet Explorer 7 and Office 2007.

For the time being I will stick with Windows XP. After all, I have waited all these years for it to finally stabilize. This is no time for me to *beta* test another OS. I will wait patiently until the SP1, and even then, I will be skeptical.

If you are anxious to get Vista (for whatever reason), I suggest you do like I do, install it on a Virtual PC first. Play with the new OS to your heart's content, but do not let it affect your productivity!

I adopted Vista when it was first released and loved it. However I have since put all of my computers back onto XP because, well - Vista is the worst operating system by Microsoft since ME, and we all know they would rather not talk about that release!

It just doesn't work, plain and simple. The UAC gets in the way of pretty much everything, and I don't care about all those people who say "it's just an extra button to press", because it's not. They are just using it to play games and not to actually do anything constructive. I am using VS2005 and that brings up another load of problems with Vista. Also program compatibility is a huge issue. Then there's the problem with nVidia drivers - if you have a nVidia card, get ready for the blue screens because sooner or later you'll be seeing alot of them!

All in all its very dissapointing indeed, that Microsoft could release something this bad again. I am sure that after countless service packs it will begin to stabilize but for now I (and ALOT of other people) have lost all faith in the product.

Microsoft released these patches recently, and AFAIK fixes all the issues you and others are facing.

I have recently also upgraded to Vista (Yeah I know... that will be another blog post), and although I have Visual Studio on it, I hardly use it. Instead, I continue doing my development on a Virtual PC running Windows XP.
